Buying from sellers on websites, Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp

This is where most online buying in Tanzania happens, and where most scams happen too. You find a seller on a page, get their number, call them, and they buy or send the item to you. Here is how to do it without losing money.

How it works

  1. Find a seller on Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp or a website such as Jiji. Their phone number is usually on their page.
  2. Call or message them and say exactly what you want. Ask for clear photos or a short video of the actual item.
  3. Agree the price and the delivery fee, and ask who delivers and when.
  4. They buy or collect the item and send it to you, usually by rider.
  5. When it arrives, check it is the right item and in good condition. Then pay.

The one rule that prevents most losses

Pay when the item reaches you and you have confirmed it is the one you ordered. Not before. Anyone can post photos, take your money and disappear. If a seller insists on full payment upfront and will not budge, that is your answer.

  • If the seller is sending a rider, the rider can wait while you check, then you pay.
  • If you must pay something first (for example a custom order), pay a small part and the rest on delivery.
  • Never share your PIN, and never send money "to release" an item or "to confirm" your order.

How to check a seller is real

  • Look at how long the page has existed and whether real customers comment, not just likes.
  • Ask for a video call or a quick video of the item with today's date or your name.
  • Ask where the shop is. Sellers with a real address are easier to trust, and to find if something goes wrong.
  • Search the seller's name and number with the word "scam".
  • Be most careful when the price is far below everywhere else. A "new" phone at half the usual price is usually not what it seems.

If something goes wrong

  • Keep the chat, photos, receipts and payment SMS. They are your evidence.
  • Contact the seller calmly and ask for the correct item or a refund.
  • If you paid through a mobile money network, report the transaction to that network quickly.
  • Warn others by leaving an honest review where you found the seller.

A safer way to order

On Nunua Pro shops publish their products and prices, confirm what they have before you pay, and you can ask a question before you buy. You can also send a verified buyer to shop for you and watch them live. Payment options include mobile money, cash where the shop allows it, or your NP Balance.

Common questions

Is it safe to buy from Instagram or WhatsApp sellers in Tanzania?
It can be, but there is no standard protection, so the habits matter: check the seller, prefer ones with a real address, and pay when the item arrives and you have checked it, not before.
Should I pay a deposit?
Avoid it with sellers you do not know. For a custom order, pay a small part and the rest on delivery, and keep proof of the agreement.
What if the seller blocks me after I pay?
Report the transaction to your mobile money network straight away and keep all evidence. This is why paying only on delivery matters: prevention works much better than recovery.
